Topic - amd64 Binary Codec Packages

I have a amd64 Linux OS,and now i want to make install mpayer. But i was so confused that why the Codec packages for Linux AMD64 at http://www.mplayerhq.hu/ was so small ,only 224.6 kB,while a Linux x86 one can be as big as about 10MB.
and in the package, it only contain few files, while in the Linux x86 codec package is many more.
someone has told me to put all the files in both packages to the directory :/usr/local/lib/codecs/.
i don't know whether it is right ,can anyone told me?
