Hi.Me again. This has been up here for months and has not been seen or commented on by any of the
mplayer wizards..unless the smiley faces are clues. Unfortunately...I,as a newbie am at a loss as to
what to do with the smiley faces. Were I capable of the feats of programing, developement and linux
expertise needed to sucessfully accomplish the complex successful manipulation of the installation
instructions spread as they are over about 70 or 80 read me's I would be knocking down a six figure
salary and be far too busy to watch a movie on the net. This player is definitely a work of art with
all kinds of possibilities. That's a wonderful thing; but the fact remains that a configure/make/
make install and a single simple but concise and complete "read me" is about the best I can do. Still
it is nice to try to play something and watch the numbers tumble as the cycle completes itself. I guess
I will always wonder what this would be like if it actually functioned. I get a little thrill installing
things from source; delusions of granduer perhaps. I don't know a hell of alot about linux except that
it's not microsoft and that mplayer could never come from such an atmosphere. I guess eventually some
malicious gnome of some sort will post some bogus instructions which I will undoubtedly follow and then
have to do a reinstallation. Why can't it pull a codec from a file it acceses...I don't know. And that
is the crux of the dillemma (sp). What percentage of linux users have the innate ability to do this
right. 6%. I guess the rest of us will have to stick to mpeg and .mov. It's a wonderful player. I'll
remember it fondly; not for what was but what could have been....
