Topic - can not play video

MPlayer-1.0rc1.tar
mplayer-codecs-20061022-1.i386

i was unable to compile it with gui. it kept saying that i don't have libpng while i do (don't know its version). i can not play video only audio works and wmv files don't work at all.
and how to play files which have space between their name like (ab cd.mp3)
